Westchase District issued the following announcement on April 27.
With fewer cars traveling on one of the state’s busiest roads due to the stay-at-home order, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) seized an opportunity to shift the Westheimer Road from IH-610 to Dairy Ashford resurfacing project to a 24/7 operation.
After resurfacing westbound lanes, road crews at Wilcrest and Westheimer work eastbound.
Phase one began on April 2 and the project has neared completion on the stretch within Westchase District’s boundary between Westerland Drive and Woodland Park Drive. Phase Two of the project is the eventual completion at Dairy Ashford.
“We thank TxDOT for maintaining the road and taking advantage of this rare opportunity,” said Irma Sanchez, vice president of projects for Westchase District. “The community is happy with the pace of TxDOT’s work and having this upgraded road portion completed with minimal traffic disruption.”
TxDOT crews are doing double-time working on the Westheimer overlay project, working 24-hours a day to complete the project. They’ve quickly worked their way from the 610 Loop and reached Westchase District in mid-April as they continue westward.
TxDOT always keeps one lane open in each direction. TxDOT does stipulate that work is subject to change due to inclement weather because asphalt cannot be laid when it is raining or too cold.
On April 20, asphalt pavers began resurfacing on the two inside westbound lanes of Westheimer.
“It is impressive how quickly the crews have progressed,” said Sanchez. “Westheimer is a state road (FM 1093) maintained by TxDOT and is resurfaced by TxDOT as part of their regular maintenance every 10 to 15 years.”
