Fort Bend County Judge KP George is urging the Texas Supreme Court to reinstate the eviction moratorium that expired late last month.

”In Fort Bend County, we are striving to educate landlords and tenants, provide rental and basic needs assistance, and pass local protections where we can,” George wrote in a letter to the county’s justices, as reported by the Fort Bend Star. ”But this patchwork of relief will be incomplete without your support.”

The rising unemployment rate in the state due to COVID-19 is among the reasons George is pushing for a continued ban on evictions until July 25, according to Fort Bend Star.

“The people most likely to lose their jobs due to the pandemic are also the most likely to have lower incomes in a regular economic climate,” he wrote in the letter.

The Texas Workforce Commission reports there have been 3.1 million unemployment claims filed since mid-March.
