Fort Bend County residents in search of help with their rent can apply for financial assistance from federal funds received by the county.

The county launched the program this month. Fort Bend County Auditor Ed Sturdivant told Community Impact Newspaper nearly $20 million would be distributed between this month and November.

“The main criteria for being eligible for these funds [are] first, you were damaged by this pandemic and, second, you have a need,” Sturdivant told the newspaper.

Approved applicants are able to receive a maximum of $2,000 per month per household, with $1,500 for rent or mortgage and up to $500 for utilities. Sturdivant said the landlords, mortgage companies or utility companies receive the money directly to prevent against fraud.

The county made the initiative possible through a $134.3 million direct allotment from the federal CARES Act.
