COVID-19 has caused many school districts to look at their budgets and make some difficult decisions, and Fort Bend Independent School District is no exception.
A $737.5 million budget was passed by the Fort Bend ISD trustees on June 15, but that did not include teacher or staff pay increases.
Bryan Gunn, the district financial officer, said the board was trying to be conservative because of the coronavirus and the uncertainty it has caused through the state, federal and global economy.
Trustee Jim Rice told Community Impact Newspaper that he was happy with a conservative budget during a workshop.
“It’s important for us to be good stewards of the taxpayers’ money and to take care of all of our teachers, and all of our staff and everyone in Fort Bend ISD because every single one of our employees is necessary to educate our kids, and we know that,” Rice told the newspaper. “But it doesn’t do us any good — it doesn’t do anyone any good — to give raises at this time and then have to take them away next year.”
