Houston Independent School District issued the following announcement on Dec. 4.
For a lot of families, the holiday table doesn’t feel complete without a turkey as its centerpiece.
Nutrition Services will be able to provide that holiday hallmark — and a little extra holiday cheer — for up to 5,000 HISD families thanks to a partnership with and generous donation from No Kid Hungry, a nonprofit organization that aims to end child hunger.
Up to 5,000 turkeys will be distributed to Houston families just ahead of HISD’s winter break during Neighborhood Supersites scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 12 and Wednesday, Dec. 16. The turkeys are funded by an $80,000 donation from No Kid Hungry.
“Since March, Nutrition Services has been hard at work finding unique and accessible ways to provide food to our students and their families,” Interim Superintendent Dr. Grenita Lathan said. “This grant gives us the chance to continue that vital work and helps our HISD families have a happy holiday season.”
The turkeys will be available while supplies last at three Neighborhood Supersite locations.
Saturday, Dec. 12; 2 to 5 p.m. — Student meals, hygiene kits, cleaning supplies, and holiday turkeys
- Hattie Mae White Educational Support Center, 4400 W. 18th St.
- Hexser T. Holliday Food Services Support Center, 6801 Bennington St.
- Barnett Stadium, 6800 Fairway Drive
“Feeding our families is one of HISD’s vital wraparound services,” HISD Nutrition Services Officer Betti Wiggins said. “Having a traditional turkey dinner available for families that not only aligns with our nutrition goals but also supports the social and emotional needs of our students and their families? Mission accomplished.”
Turkeys and other community food and supplies are available to all, but student meals are reserved for children between the ages of 1 and 18. If children are not in the car, families must provide a birth certificate or proof of enrollment in any school district for each child needing meals.
