WASHINGTON, D.C.— Congressman Troy E. Nehls (R-TX-22) has voted in favor of impeaching U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. In a statement, Congressman Nehls emphasized the importance of accountability for government officers and highlighted the specific actions that led to the decision.
Quoting Congressman Nehls, "The Framers of our Constitution restricted impeachment to treason, bribery, and other high Crimes and Misdemeanors. This standard applied to behavior found damaging to the state, including significant abuses of a government office or power, neglect of duty, and betrayals of the trust of the American people, among other things."
According to the articles of impeachment, Secretary Mayorkas is accused of willfully and systematically refusing to comply with immigration laws enacted by Congress. Additionally, he is alleged to have breached the public trust by knowingly making false statements to Congress and obstructing Congressional oversight of his department.
One of the major concerns raised against Secretary Mayorkas is his implementation of a catch and release scheme, allowing illegal aliens to be dispersed throughout the country while they await their immigration court date. Congressman Nehls pointed out that this not only goes against the nation's immigration laws but also wreaks havoc and destroys communities.
Moreover, Secretary Mayorkas's guidance regarding the treatment of illegal aliens with criminal and terrorism-related backgrounds has drawn criticism. Instead of taking them into custody upon release from law enforcement, he issued guidance stating that conviction alone could not be used as a basis for removal. Congressman Nehls described this as "not only disgraceful but also grounds for impeachment."
The consequences of Secretary Mayorkas's refusal to enforce immigration laws have been significant. Congressman Nehls mentioned that over 8.3 million illegal aliens have crossed the borders, and 1.7 million known individuals have managed to evade Border Patrol Agents. The lack of enforcement has raised concerns about the identities, whereabouts, and activities of these individuals on U.S. soil.
The decision to impeach Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas reflects the concerns raised by Congressman Troy E. Nehls and his belief in holding government officers accountable for their actions. The allegations against Secretary Mayorkas, including the willful refusal to comply with immigration laws and the obstruction of Congressional oversight, form the basis for this impeachment vote.
