WASHINGTON, D.C.—Today, Congressman Troy E. Nehls (R-TX-22) and Congressman Jimmy Panetta (D-CA-19) are leading a bipartisan effort urging robust funding for the Protecting Our Lives by Initiating COPS Expansion (POLICE) Act of 2016 within the Fiscal Year (FY) 2025 CJS Appropriations bill.

The POLICE Act provides essential active shooter response training for local law enforcement, first responders, emergency medical service (EMS), and firefighters. Congressman Nehls emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating, “With the increase in crime and over 9.2 million illegal aliens having crossed our nation’s borders with Joe Biden in the White House, our nation’s first responders and law enforcement officers need to be prepared to face any situation while protecting and defending our communities from the lawlessness of the policies of the radical Left.”

Congressman Panetta echoed the need for preparedness, stating, “As active shooter threats continue to evolve around the country, our first responders need to be prepared to effectively counter such situations.”

The letter, cosigned by 18 Members of Congress, emphasizes the importance of continued funding for the POLICE Act to ensure that first responders are equipped to handle active shooter situations effectively. The bipartisan initiative has empowered over 146,000 law enforcement, fire, and EMS officials with crucial skills to save lives during emergencies.

The cosigners of the letter include Representatives from both parties, highlighting the bipartisan support for this critical program. They urge Chairman Hal Rogers and Ranking Member Matt Cartwright of the Commerce, Justice, Science, and Related Agencies (CJS) Appropriations Subcommittee to prioritize funding for the POLICE Act in the upcoming Fiscal Year 2025 CJS Appropriations bill.

The letter concludes with a request for Chairman Rogers and Ranking Member Cartwright to continue robust funding for the POLICE Act, ensuring that first responders are fully prepared to handle any active shooter situation.
