Today, Representatives Troy E. Nehls and Jimmy Panetta reintroduced the National Law Enforcement Remembrance, Support, and Community Outreach Act in Washington, D.C. This bipartisan bill aims to establish a program within the U.S. Department of Interior to enhance community outreach and officer safety programs at the National Law Enforcement Museum through grants to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund (NLEOMF).
The proposed legislation seeks to memorialize law enforcement officers, compile data on fatalities and injuries, improve public understanding of law enforcement roles, and foster stronger connections between officers and communities.
Congressman Nehls expressed his pride in reintroducing the bill alongside Congressman Panetta. "Day in and day out, our nation's law enforcement officers put their lives on the line to protect our communities," he stated. Congressman Panetta emphasized the importance of recognizing law enforcement's bravery and sacrifices: “This legislation is bipartisanship recognition for the courage and service of law enforcement."
The act has garnered support from various organizations including the Federal Law Enforcement Officers Association, Fraternal Order of Police, Motorola Solutions, Verizon, DuPont, and others.
Bill Alexander, CEO of NLEOMF said: "The fact that Congress saw fit to create the National Law Enforcement Memorial... sets a powerful precedent that Congress recognizes the vital importance of our mission."
Among those backing this initiative are Representatives Pete Stauber, Jim Costa, Doug LaMalfa among others. Congressman Costa remarked on standing with law enforcement families: “It ensures they have the support... they deserve." Congressman Thanedar highlighted recent events like Officer Cameron Richardson's death as reasons for increased support.
Congressman Pappas stated: "We must always support their critical work." Similarly, Congressman Valadao reaffirmed commitment by saying: "By investing in programs... we reaffirm our commitment."
Congresswoman Craig noted her pride in supporting a bill that provides resources to honor officers' service. Congressman Garbarino also praised efforts to strengthen bonds between law enforcement and communities.
Congressman Bacon underscored how this legislation could increase public understanding while compiling crucial statistics on fatalities.
On National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day Congresswoman Fischbach expressed her honor in being an original cosponsor stating it is important for Congress "to memorialize heroes who were killed" while supporting current officers' safety.
