Today, Congressman Troy E. Nehls (R-TX-22) announced the passage of his bill, H.R. 695, known as the Medal of Honor Act, in the United States House of Representatives. The bill was introduced by Congressman Nehls alongside Congressman Chris Pappas during both the 118th and 119th Congress sessions.

The legislation proposes an increase in the special pension for Medal of Honor recipients from $16,880.76 annually to approximately $67,500 per year. This adjustment represents a nearly fourfold increase and is designed to be fully offset.

"Our nation’s Medal of Honor recipients are brave heroes who went above and beyond the call of duty in service to our great country," stated Congressman Nehls. "My bill, the Medal of Honor Act, would ease the financial burdens of the 63 living Medal of Honor recipients and their families."

Congressman Pappas added, "The Medal of Honor is our nation’s highest military decoration. It symbolizes the valor displayed by distinguished men and women in extraordinary moments." He emphasized that ensuring financial security for these veterans is a responsibility shared by all Americans.

The history of this special pension dates back to April 27, 1916, when Congress first legislated a monthly stipend for Medal of Honor recipients at $10 per month. Over time, adjustments have been made with increases occurring in 1961 and most recently in 2002.

Eligibility for this pension remains based solely on receipt of the Medal itself and does not affect other benefits under U.S. law. With fewer than 70 living recipients today, this program remains smaller than others such as Veterans Pension or Survivors Pension programs.

The act has gained additional support from Representatives Lauren Boebert (R-CO-04), Monica De La Cruz (R-TX-15), Jeff Van Drew (R-NJ-02), and Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX), who introduced companion legislation in the Senate.
