Austin County County: Hispanic students were most represented ethnicity in 2021-22 school year

Of the many ethnicities represented in Austin County County schools, the most prevalent ethnic group among students enrolled in Austin County County schools in 2021-22 school year were Hispanic, according to the Texas Education Agency.

Of the 5,490 students attending Austin County County schools, 44.5% were Hispanic. White students were the second largest ethnicity, making up 44.2% of Austin County County students.

In the previous school year, white students were the most common group in Austin County County, representing 43.8% of the student body.

Selman Elementary School had the most even distribution of races among the county schools, including 51.4% Hispanic students, 32.2% white students, 10.1% Black students, 4.4% Multi-racial students, 1.4% Asian students, and 0.5% Pacific Islander students.

In the 2021-22 school year, the total number of students enrolled in public schools in the county increased 0.3% when compared to the previous year.

Education in Texas is often a hot button issue, especially as test scores lag behind other states.

“The problems commonly cited are flaws in the school financing system, relatively low teacher salary, poor test performance by students…dropouts from traditional schools in favor of charter schools…gun violence, and mental health issues,” claimed the Texas Almanac.
